How to convert min/mile to min/km
Divide your pace in minutes per mile by 1.609344. An 8:00 mile is 8 ÷ 1.609344 = 4.97 minutes per kilometre, which reads as 4:58. This is the same conversion as the other direction with the operation flipped, and it is the one you need when a plan written in miles meets a race measured in kilometres.
The min/mile to min/km formula
Take the pace as decimal minutes, divide by 1.609344, then convert the fractional part back to seconds. A 9:30 mile is 9.5 ÷ 1.609344 = 5.903 minutes per kilometre. The 0.903 becomes 54 seconds, giving 5:54/km.
Your kilometre number will always be smaller. If it comes out bigger you have multiplied when you meant to divide, which is the single most common slip in both directions.
Where American runners hit this
Most published training plans in the United States are written in miles, while most races outside it are measured in kilometres and most road signs abroad count down in kilometres too. A runner following a mile-based plan into a European marathon has to make this conversion for every session, then again at every kilometre marker on race day.
Track sessions add a second layer. A 400 metre lap is not a quarter mile, it is 0.2485 of one, so mile splits do not map onto lap splits cleanly and are worth converting before you start rather than between reps.

Why is my kilometre pace faster than my mile pace?
It is not faster, it is a shorter unit. You cover a kilometre in less time than a mile at identical effort, so the number is smaller.
Does a 400m track lap equal a quarter mile?
No. A quarter mile is 402.34 metres, so a lap is about 2.3 metres short. Over a mile of repeats that is roughly two seconds.
