Convert running pace between min/km and min/mile

Enter a pace on the minute and second scrubber and the other unit appears underneath as you move. Type 5:15 per kilometre and Milemark shows 8:27 per mile. There is no convert button and no second screen, because the conversion is the app.

The maths uses the exact international mile, 1.609344 kilometres. Rounding a mile to 1.6 sounds close enough until you carry the error across 42 kilometres, where it costs a marathon runner about 16 seconds.

See your pace as speed in km/h and mph

The same pace appears as two speed tiles: 11.4 km/h and 7.1 mph for that 5:15 per kilometre. Treadmill dials are marked in speed rather than pace, so this is the number you actually dial in at the gym.

Race finish times for 5K, 10K, half and marathon

Underneath the conversion sits a live finish time for each standard distance. Hold 5:15 per kilometre and you finish a 5K in 26:15, a 10K in 52:30, a half marathon in 1:50:46 and a marathon in 3:41:31. Move the pace by a second and every row moves with it.

Half marathon uses 21.0975 km and marathon uses 42.195 km, the official distances, not the rounded 21 and 42 that shave a minute off a slow marathon.

Pin your target pace to the Lock Screen

Save a pace and it sits on your Lock Screen and Home Screen as a widget, readable without unlocking the phone or opening anything. That is the one feature behind the $1.99 unlock, bought once and kept.

What Milemark deliberately does not do

There is no GPS, no run tracking, no account and no subscription. Nothing is uploaded because there is no server to upload it to. The app opens on the one screen it has and the answer is already there.

Common questions

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?

Multiply the pace in minutes per kilometre by 1.609344. A 5:00/km pace is 5.0 × 1.609344 = 8.047 minutes, which is 8:03 per mile. Milemark does this as you type, in both directions.

How do I convert min/mile to min/km?

Divide by 1.609344 instead of multiplying. An 8:00 mile is 8 ÷ 1.609344 = 4.97 minutes, or 4:58 per kilometre. The direction is the only thing that changes.

What speed in km/h is a 5:00 min/km pace?

12.0 km/h, because speed in km/h is 60 divided by the pace in minutes per kilometre. In mph that same pace is 7.46. Treadmills are marked in speed, so this is the conversion you need at the gym.

Can I put my running pace on my iPhone Lock Screen?

Yes. Save a target pace in Milemark, then add its widget to your Lock Screen through the wallpaper editor. The pace stays visible without unlocking the phone. This needs the one-time $1.99 unlock.

What pace do I need for a 4 hour marathon?

5:41 per kilometre, or 9:09 per mile. That comes from 240 minutes divided by the official marathon distance of 42.195 km.

What pace is a sub 2 hour half marathon?

5:41 per kilometre, or 9:09 per mile, the same pace as a 4 hour marathon over half the distance. Most runners target 5:38 to give themselves a buffer for aid stations and a long course.

What pace is a 25 minute 5K?

5:00 per kilometre, or 8:03 per mile. A 30 minute 5K is 6:00 per kilometre and a sub-20 needs 3:59.

I train in kilometres but my race is in miles. What do I do?

Convert your key session paces once, write both numbers on the same line of your plan, and stop converting mid-run. Doing arithmetic at threshold effort is how runners go out too fast.

Is Milemark free?

The converter, the speed readout and the race finish times are free. Saving a target pace to your Lock Screen is a $1.99 one-time unlock. There is no subscription.

Does Milemark track my runs or need an account?

No to both. It has no GPS, no run history and no sign-in, and it sends nothing anywhere. It is a calculator that happens to be very good at one calculation.
